0–5 Lesson Plan: What Can My Prayers Do?

Note to parent or teacher: Here is a 30-minute 0–5 lesson plan on the power of one’s prayers and how to use them to help others, draw closer to Jesus, make a difference, express gratitude, and more.

Read the first page of “Prayer Can….” Then, starting on pages two and three, after each point covered in the article, talk about what prayers can do and how prayers can make a difference. For example, ask, “How can prayer draw you closer to Jesus?” Some possible answers could be: Because when you pray, you are talking to Jesus; or when you pray, you can also listen to Jesus and hear what He has to say, etc.

ReadHow Far Can Prayers Go?

Have the children list three people who could use your prayers, either because they would benefit from help with doing something, are sick, or are in need of something. Then take a few minutes to pray for those people, asking God to be with them and help them in their situations.

ReadMy Little Talks with Jesus: I’m never too busy to hear your prayers” and “Make a Difference.”

Have each child draw a picture of something that they would like Jesus’ help with, either personally or for someone else. In a corner of their picture, write the verse: “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16 NIV). Encourage them to put the picture by their beds so they are reminded to pray for that situation when they lie down for sleep each night.

Close by praising Jesus for the power of prayer. Thank Him for His help to use prayer throughout the day not only to ask Him for help or for things, but also to praise Him for His loving care.

Level 1 Lesson Plan: Jesus Hears Our Prayers

Note to parent or teacher: Here is a 20-minute lesson plan on the following lesson objectives:

Listen toHe Heareth Us.” Highlight the promise in this scripture that God hears their prayers.

ReadHow I Love Your Prayers.” Pause after each page and ask the children to remember a time when they’ve prayed for someone else or themselves similar to any of the points brought out in this article’s list.

If one of your children or someone they know needs prayer for a point that is mentioned, say a prayer and again read a Bible promise from the page that supports your prayer.

Talk about how God answers our prayers, but sometimes we don’t notice immediate results because the time has to be right to receive the answer. Sometimes, He also doesn’t answer in the way we expect Him to. However, we can be assured that God is working to answer even if we don’t understand how or see the results right away.

Read Prayer Magnets.”

Read The Lord’s Prayer.” You can also find an audio of the prayer to listen to here.

ReadBookend Prayers with Praise.” Point out how the Lord’s Prayer also begins and ends with praise. At the beginning, Jesus says that God’s name is hallowed, which means His name deserves great respect. The Lord’s Prayer ends with the praise, “For Yours is the kingdom and power and glory.”

Listen toMorning Prayer.” If you like, at the end of the class you can encourage the children to sing the chorus as a prayer for the day:

Please come and walk with me today,
And guide my steps along Your way.
Help me to keep my thoughts on You,
And pray before each thing I do.
And pray before each thing I do.

“Gift of Joy” Supplement (Character Building: Personal Responsibility: Problem Solving-1a)

After you and your children have read “Gift of Joy,” here’s an activity to help reinforce what they’ve learned.

Along with the children, take turns acting out a scene of something that you probably would be unhappy about. You and your children can then suggest things that could be done in order to experience the joy Jesus gives, even in a situation that might not seem so good at first.
