Level 1 Lesson Plan: Gaining Wisdom from Difficulties

Here is a lesson plan that can be covered in a 30- to 45-minute class. It relates to the lesson objectives on wisdom:

• Learn that the root of all wisdom comes from God, the fear of Him, and God’s Word; read and memorize Scripture upon which these principles are based. (Character Building: Values and Virtues: Wisdom 1a)
• Understand that wisdom is a gift of the Spirit, and godly wisdom is a manifestation of God’s Spirit within us. (Character Building: Values and Virtues: Wisdom 1b)
• Learn that there is a difference between man’s understanding and God’s wisdom. (Character Building: Values and Virtues: Wisdom 1c)

Enjoy singing and dancing along with “Sing, O Heavens.”

Start with “Discover Jewels through Difficulties.” If either of the two examples can be recently applied to your child, study further as suggested in the text.

Read Standing on God’s Word: Caring for Pets.” Ask your child what jewels the children might have gained through this incident, such as:

• The children were reminded about the importance of being diligent in the details of caring for pets. Neglecting little things can sometimes have big negative consequences. For example, the little neglect of checking on Hammy’s water caused him to be sick from dehydration.
• This could be applied to other areas in the children’s lives. Perhaps they feel impatient with the expectation of being diligent with the small things they are asked to do around the house. Talk about the repercussions of not being diligent, such as when the water in the bathroom is left running, or when they do not flush the toilet, etc.
• Bible verse jewels that can be applied can be found in “Crazily Cool Card Set: Faithfulness.”

Read Standing on God’s Word: Don’t Argue, Have Fun” and “Standing on God’s Word: Forgiving Others.” Nick’s experiences help him to discover jewels that help him get along better with others. Discuss with your child the jewels Nick can gain from these experiences, such as:

• Being considerate of what the other person wants to do.
• How the joy that comes from getting along well together can be a greater joy than can be gained by always trying to get to do what you want.
• How friendships are hindered when we don’t forgive, but can grow when we do forgive.
• Read the Bible verses found within these two articles, and talk with the children about how they can apply these jewels in their lives.

ReadStanding on God’s Word: Be Appreciative and Thankful.”

Ask your child what jewels can be found in this experience. Some examples are:

• Showing consideration of the feelings of those who do things for us by appreciating what they do.
• Often when something is difficult for us, Jesus does things to help us, similar to how the mother added raisins to the rice pudding, which made it more enjoyable. Read the Bible verse about how God makes a “way of escape” or makes things easier for us in what we might consider a difficult situation. Can you and your child think of times something was done to make a situation easier for the child?

Wrap up this study by talking with your child about difficulties that they have encountered in the past week or month, discussing the final point in the article “Discover Jewels through Difficulties”: “There are many jewels to find, even in difficulties. What jewels in God’s Word have you discovered this week?”

Level 1 Lesson Plan: Jesus Is God’s Word

Here is a lesson plan that can be covered in 30 minutes to an hour. It relates to the lesson objectives: “Learn about Jesus, God’s Son, and why He came to earth,” and “be able to identify the benefits of reading God’s Word daily and becoming a student of the Word.” (Christian Life and Faith: Biblical and Christian Foundation: Jesus, God’s Son-1a; and Christian Life and Faith: Biblical and Christian Foundation: God’s Word-1c).

Fill in the blanks of the activity “Jesus Is the Word.”

Points to discuss when reading the above article.

Page 1: Jesus is “the Word.” That’s because Jesus portrays the entire truth of God. Similar to how we read words to help us know a subject, we also get to know about God through knowing Jesus.

Everything was made by the Word, Jesus.

Page 2: When Jesus said that by following Him a person does not walk in darkness, what does He mean? Jesus taught and showed us the best way to live. He shined the light of His truth into the world by showing us both through example and through His Word how to live and love.

Page 3: John the Baptist told people that Jesus was coming, and baptized many to symbolize washing away their sins. He was preparing them for the arrival of Jesus. You can read about John baptizing Jesus in the article “When Jesus Was Baptized.” Read more about this prophet’s life in “Faith-Filled Models from the New Testament: John the Baptist,” and in pages 6–8 of “A Man Named Jesus, Chapter 1: Two Miraculous Babies.”

Page 4: Jesus came to earth as God’s gift to each one of us. However, though He was God’s gift of love, and though He is the one who created each of us, when He came, many people did not like Him and they turned against Him.

Page 5: Jesus knew His Father personally, and loved Him very much. He came to show us His Father, so that we could know Him as our Father too, and so we could live as sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father. The Father loves us very much!

Page 6: Jesus came to earth, became human, so that he could show us what God was like. Jesus, the Word, the truth about God, became a human to bring us into a full, loving relationship with God.

ReadFaith-Filled Models from the New Testament: John the Beloved.”

Listen to the audio, “I Am the Way.”

Read Meals with Jesus: Mary and Martha.” There is also an accompanying 3D picture of the story that can be assembled, as well as a coloring page.

Discuss why Jesus said that Mary had chosen what was good. Jesus was explaining to Martha that hearing His teachings was very important, which is why He told her that Mary’s choice was good. However, it was also important to serve the food to their guest, as Martha was doing, and Jesus didn’t say that Martha was wrong in doing so.

Listen to Jesus now to hear what words of love He has for you.

Choose from these cards Bible verses that go with the above lesson. If you haven’t already, you can print, cut, and color them as well.

Level 1 Lesson Plan: Bananas and Life Goals

Here is a lesson plan that can be covered in 20 to 30 minutes, relating to the lesson objective: “Learn of the importance of investing into one’s education, and identify with biblical, historical, and present-day characters who were/are successful, due to investing in their education.” (Character Building: Personal Responsibility: Learning and Study Skills-1b)

Compare some of the points explained about producing bananas to experiences in the child’s life:
1) The banana shoot is well cleaned to make sure it is free from disease. This could be compared to how a parent or teacher explains what is acceptable behavior and what is not. For example, discuss with the child lessons about comportment they may have been learning recently. Talk about how learning takes time.
2) The banana plants are shown growing in clear jars, then planted into pots of ground coconut shell, and finally are planted in the field. This could be compared to how children go to preschool, then primary school, and step by step on to higher education.
3) There are often many steps that need to be taken to reach a goal, just like there are many steps to reach the goal of growing good bananas. Education is one way children prepare for adulthood, through learning important skills such as mathematics, social studies, science, language arts, etc. These steps are important, and it takes time to progress through those steps.
4) Each step is important. Talk about what would happen if one of the steps for producing bananas was not executed properly. For example, faulty drainage could cause young banana plants to drown. Bananas not packed well or kept at an incorrect temperature when shipped to another country will arrive in poor condition or even rotten. 
                In the case of a child’s education, children are trained one step at a time in the variety of subjects that they need training in for their lives. Sometimes it seems tiring or frustrating, as they have to pay close attention to understand the lessons well, but it’s all worthwhile.

Talk about how God used a servant girl to bring about the miracle of Naaman’s healing, and that it most likely wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t been faithful to talk about what God could do through Elisha. Point out how God wants us to be faithful to Him even in seemingly small things, and then He can do the big things that only He can do.

Level 1 Lesson Plan: The Prophet Elijah

Read Faith-Filled Models from the New Testament: Elijah, the Prophet.”

Explain the meaning of the name “Elijah,” which is “My God is the Lord.”

Ask the children what two words are needed to finish this sentence that Elijah spoke to the people of Israel. “If the Lord be God, ______ ___” (1 Kings 18:21 KJV). (Answer: follow him.)

Do you know what New Testament prophet was meant to have the spirit and power of Elijah with him? (Hint: The answer can be found in the story, “Let’s Learn the New Testament: Jesus Was Born".)

Watch sections of “Bible Stories for Kids: The Story of Elijah” or read from a Bible storybook about Elijah’s ministry. (Some parts of this video are to be skipped to protect sensitive viewers.)

  • How Elijah started: 0:00 – 3:16 (skip over 2:20 – 2:56 for sensitive viewers).
  • Elijah prophesies against King Ahab: 3:17 – 3:49.
  • Elijah hides in the wilderness: 4:22 – 5:26.
  • God cared for Elijah during the drought: 6:02 – 6:44.
  • The miracle of the flour and oil: 7:07– 9:45.
  • Healing of the widow’s son: 9:46 – 11:21.

Listen to the audio “Pour Out a Blessing.”

Talk about how God didn’t fail Elijah during his time of need, and how He also blessed the widow for her giving. Tell the children stories of times when God supplied for you, and how He blessed your giving.

Study or memorize from “Crazily Cool Cards Set: Giving.”

Level 1 Lesson Plan: Paul, the Faithful Witness

SESSIONS 1 – 4
Read and study
the following classes, going over one a day. (Tip: To gain the most from these classes, read the story in a children’s or regular Bible. Scriptural references are found within each article.)

SESSION 5
Listen to
the audio “I Know Whom I Have Believed.” Look up 2 Timothy 1:12 in the Bible to show the children which of Paul’s letters this is from.

Study the verses in “Crazily Cool Card Set: Want Some Power?” Ask the children if they can find the one verse that was written by Paul. (Answer: 2 Corinthians 4:7.)

Discuss the verses in “Crazily Cool Cards Set: An Active Force Field.”

Memorize a verse from one of the above two “Crazily Cool Card Sets.” (You can also print these out to use as coloring pages.)

Level 1 Lesson Plan: Introducing Paul the Apostle

Read Faith-filled Models from the New Testament: Paul the Apostle” and November Hero of the Month: Paul the Apostle.” If the children are unfamiliar with the martyrdom of Stephen, read about Stephen from the story found in Acts 7:1–60. You can find a simple visualization of the story here.

Did you know that “The Feast of Saint Stephen” is celebrated in some countries on the 26th of December, the day after Christmas, to honor Stephen as the first Christian martyr?

Listen to An Audio Bible Adventure: A Rabbi Sees the Light.

ColorColoring Page: The Acts of the Apostles: The Road to Damascus.” You might also like to assemble this 3D picture, “3D Picture: The Acts of the Apostles: The Road to Damascus.”

Do you know why the book of Acts uses the names of both “Saul” and “Paul” for the same man? “But Saul, who was also called Paul…” (Acts 13:9 ESV). Saul was his name in Hebrew. Paul was his name in Latin, the language of the Roman Empire.

ReadThe Acts of the Apostles: Saul Escapes in a Basket.” To give the children a fuller study of this story, you can also read with them Acts 9:8–25. There is also a coloring page and a 3D picture that accompanies this story.

Ask the children if they can think of another Bible story that has to do with someone being lowered from the top of a house. (See “A Plan to Help a Friend.”)

Anticipating Christmas!

You can begin celebrating Christmas now by starting to prepare The Nativity Story paper model. The goal is to create and set out a new section each week of December, so you can place Baby Jesus in the manger on Christmas morning.

Alternately, you can create the pieces in advance, and then starting on December 1st, set out one or two pieces a day, with the aim of adding Baby Jesus on Christmas Day, and the wise men with their gifts the following days.

To set out The Nativity Story paper model as the story unfolds:

Sunday, December 4th: Mary, Joseph, and the donkey, as they prepare for their trip to Bethlehem.

Sunday, December 11th: In Bethlehem, set up the stable, manger, cow, cats, chickens, and mouse, ready to receive their unexpected guests.

Sunday, December 18th: Outside of Bethlehem, place the shepherds, sheep, and campfire.

Sunday, December 25th: Bring all the characters to the stable, adding Baby Jesus to the manger and the angel announcing His birth.

Sunday, January 1st: The wise men arrive with their camels, bearing gifts for Baby Jesus.

The Nativity Story paper model can be found here, where it is offered by the model creator, Didier Martin, to download, print, and assemble.

Download all three PDFs that include the model parts. Also, download the instructions, which teach how to cut, fold, and glue together your Nativity scene.

Note: The most difficult piece to assemble is the stable. If you prefer, you could use a small box, set on its side, and then glue the leaves to the top and the textured wall pieces or colored paper on the inside and outside of the box.
