Level 2 Lesson Plan: The Village of Emmaus

Note to the parent or teacher: Here is a 30- to 45-minute lesson plan to fill out the class “Cities of the Bible: The Village of Emmaus,” that covers the lesson objective, “Learn of the historical backings to the life of Jesus, His death on the cross, and His resurrection.” (Christian Life and Faith: Biblical and Christian Foundation: Jesus, God’s Son-2a)

Read “Cities of the Bible: The Village of Emmaus.”

Check out the possible location of the village of Emmaus on a map. The village no longer exits, but some believe it might have been located where it is shown on this map.

Look up Luke 24:13–35.

Read Luke 24, verses 13–16.

Ask your child for ideas of why these two disciples didn’t recognize Jesus at first. Some possibilities could be:

•    They knew He had died, so it didn’t occur to them that this could actually be Jesus, Himself.
•    They were not among His closest 12 disciples and perhaps didn’t see Him up close or long enough to remember how He looked.
•    In those days, there was no video or even photographs to help become familiar with how someone looked.

Read Luke 24, verses 17–24.

Imagine with your child the pain and disappointment Jesus’ followers must have experienced when He died, and how their hopes had been dashed for the country of Israel to be restored by Jesus. Then imagine with your child the added confusion His disciples might have experienced when His body had disappeared, thinking it might have been stolen.

Read Luke 24, verses 25–27.

Follow up by reading “Messianic Prophecies and Their Fulfillment, Part 1,” and “Messianic Prophecies and Their Fulfillment, Part 2.”

Read Luke 24, verses 28–35.

Imagine with your child the disciples’ surprise and joy as they suddenly recognized Jesus when He blessed and broke the bread.

View “Road to Emmaus.”

Reflect how God can use a small village for such a wonderful story. He can do mighty things with each of us, no matter how insignificant we might feel at times.

0–5 Lesson Plan: God’s Gifts of Salvation and Forgiveness

Note to parent or teacher: Here is a 40-minute 0–5 lesson plan on the gift of salvation and the forgiveness that Jesus gives those who ask Him for it.

Read “God’s Great Love for Us.”

Talk about things that can be done every day to be a good reflection of Jesus. Ask the children whether it is always easy to do what is right or good, and why one might choose to do something that is wrong, unkind, or hurtful. Explain how Jesus wants to help His children choose to do what is right, and that help is available through prayer.

Read “Salvation Is Forever.”

Explain how even though someone may do wrong at times, if he or she comes to Jesus with a sorry heart and asks Jesus for His forgiveness, He is eager to help. Ask the children if there are any things that they could use Jesus’ forgiveness for, then take a few minutes to pray and ask Jesus for His forgiveness and His help to do better next time.

Read “Salvation Is Free.”

Read “Bright Pebbles: That Simple,” then complete the “action” on the last page.

Memorize John 3:16.

Read “Twice Mine.”

Listen to “My Little Thoughts on God: Salvation Is a Gift” and color one of the coloring pages.

End by praising Jesus for His love and gift of salvation.

Note to the parent or teacher: Here is an hour-long lesson plan highlighting the lesson objective: “Learn of Jesus’ death and resurrection.” (Christian Life and Faith: Biblical and Christian Foundation: Jesus, God’s Son-1d)

Listen to and sing along with “Jesus Is Alive.”

Read “Bible MiniWorld: The Easter Story.”

If you have an iPad or iPhone, have fun with the app “Jesus Is Alive.”

View “Beginner’s Bible: The Story of Easter.” 

View “Animated: The Easter Story.” 

Read “Meals with Jesus: The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus.”

Take time with the children to imagine yourselves being these followers who encountered Jesus and who thought they would never hear Jesus teach again after He died. Reflect on how exciting it must have been to discover Jesus was alive and to have been taught once again by Him!

Assemble the “3D Picture: Meals with Jesus: The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus,” and/or coloring “Coloring Page: Meals with Jesus: The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus.”

0-5 Lesson Plan: A Love So Great

Note to parent or teacher: Here is a 30-minute 0–5 lesson plan on Easter and God’s great love for us, and how we can demonstrate some of the qualities witnessed in Jesus’ life on earth in our everyday actions.

Read “Pray a Way: Easter.”

Watch “He’s Alive.”

Explain how Jesus lived a life that was filled with love, honesty, courage, and kindness. Even though Jesus left earth, He promised to always be near His children and would help them to teach other people about God.

Memorize the Bible verse, “And be sure of this: I am with you always.”1

Read “Jesus’ Love for Us.”

Talk about ways to follow Jesus’ example every day, and in so doing, make the world a better place. For example, building your faith in God and drawing closer to Him, being kind to others, being brave even when facing a difficult situation, being truthful, etc.

Read “Bright Pebbles: So Much Love.”

Stand up and get ready to hop. Hop once, then thank God for His love for you. Hop again and tell someone in your family how much you love him or her. Then hop and tell God about your love for Him. Hop again, and say something loving to one of your family. Do this until you have said something loving to each person in your family.2

Level 2 Lesson Plan: Why Do We Celebrate Easter?

Here is a 30- to 40-minute lesson plan that highlights the following lesson objective: “Learn of the historical backings to the life of Jesus, His death on the cross, and His resurrection.” (Christian Life and Faith: Biblical and Christian Foundation: Jesus, God’s Son-2a)

Ask your child what Easter means to them. If needed, remind your child why those who believe in Jesus celebrate Easter.

Read “What Happened on That Day?”

Discuss how although Jesus went through much suffering and injustice before His death, it was all for the purpose of carrying out the reason He came to Earth, which was to die for us, so that our sins might be forgiven. Also talk about how in the end He arose and defeated death—how nothing could keep Him from fulfilling His mission.

Watch “He Lives” (YouTube video clip with movie opener).

Listen to “He’s Alive.”

Read “Another Layer of Easter.”

Talk about how Jesus left us the wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit to assist us as we continue to follow His way of life, and how this is another part of Easter that we can celebrate.

Watch “Remember Me.”

End with thanking Jesus for His sacrifice, so that we could have the gift of salvation of our spirit and body, bringing us back into full union with God. Also thank Him for giving us the wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit, so that He could continue to live His story of love and salvation through us.

Pray the first prayer of “Pray a Way: Easter.”

Read “The Prince and the Magical Power,” and talk about how God’s love was manifested through Jesus coming to live as a man on earth.

Listen to “He’s Alive!”

Read Fascinating Facts about Easter.

Read “A Spot along the Way Home,” and talk about how we are free from the fear of death with the knowledge that when this body dies, we live on with Jesus because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection three days later. If the children know of someone who has already passed on from this life, talk about the joys that the person might be experiencing now.

Listen to “Magnificent Park.”

Pray the second prayer of “Pray a Way: Easter.”

Color one of the two Easter prayers.

Level 1 Lesson Plan: Appreciate Easter

Sing along with “New Testament.”

Read “In the Garden of Gethsemane.”

Read “The Story of Easter.” To help the children relate to what Jesus’ friends and disciples experienced when they saw Jesus after He was resurrected, ask the children, “How would you feel if a close friend died, and you were sure he or she was dead and had been buried, and then three days later this friend comes to visit you in your house? What would your reaction be?”

View “Video: He’s Alive”

Complete the activities in “‘The Story of Easter’ Activity Pages”.

Read “The Little Red Hen,” and then pray the prayer James prays at the end of the story.

Memorize John 15:13, “Greater love has no man than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (NKJV)

Read “Truly This Was the Son of God”.

Color “Easter Coloring Pages” and “Coloring Page: Truly This Was the Son of God” (to be posted on April 4th, 2012). The children can listen to the song “New Testament” while they color to help them become more familiar with the song.

Draw a picture of Jesus’ resurrection using “Be the Artist: He’s Alive!”

Easter Supplement (Jesus, God’s Son-2a)

This supplement provides additional material for the following learning objective: “Learn of the historical backings to the life of Jesus, His death on the cross, and His resurrection.” (Jesus, God’s Son-2a)

  • Read the Easter story from Matthew 28:1–20, and/or “The Story of Easter” (available on Level 1 of My Wonder Studio on April 20th).
  • Listen and/or dance to “He Is Risen,” The Bible Album, and/or “He Lives,” Walk, Talk, Sing.
  • Have each person in your family pick one event from the story of Easter to illustrate (you can use “Be the Artist: He’s Alive” for drawing assistance—available on Level 1 of My Wonder Studio on April 20th), and then combine these pictures to make your very own illustrated Easter storyboard. Put this in a place for others to see.
  • Look up the verses Luke 19:10 and Romans 5:6–11, then discuss why Jesus had to die. List these reasons on a whiteboard or have your children write them out in their notebooks under the heading, “Why Jesus made the greatest sacrifice.” You can also read “The Little Red Hen” (available on Level 1 of My Wonder Studio on April 13th) for a story on this topic.
  • “The Story of Easter, Coloring Pages” and “The Story of Easter, Activity Pages” (available on Level 1 of My Wonder Studio on April 20th)
  • Watch the Easter story from a movie or animation of Jesus’ life. (For example., Miracle Maker or “He Is Risen,” Animated Stories from the New Testament)
  • The Robe also makes for an inspiring Easter-themed movie.
