Note to parent or teacher: Here’s a 30- to 40-minute lesson plan to teach about who God is, describing His nature through exploring and applying scriptural explanations. (Christian Life and Faith: Biblical and Christian Foundation: God-1a) Please note that while the memorization verses have a specific translation version, you can use the Bible version of your choice for the verses listed for memory.
Read Genesis 1:1, John 1:1, and Psalm 36:7.
Discuss what we can tell about God from these verses. (Answers: He created the world, He is the Word, and He loves us.)
Read “God Is Powerful!”
Memorize “[God] has made the earth by His power” (Jeremiah 10:12 NKJV).
“God is love” (1 John 4:8 KJV).
Activity: With the children, make a list of all the things they can think of that are powerful. Ask the children how God compares to these things.
Have the children imagine combining the power of everything on their list into one. Talk about how even when everything powerful is combined, it is no match for the power of God.
Color page 6 of “God Is Powerful” (“God’s power can be seen in many ways…”).
Song: “God of All Flesh”
Discuss with the children how God is so powerful that He’s capable of doing whatever we ask of Him that is within His will.
Read “Can we see God?”
Memorize “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship” (Psalm 19:1 NLT).
Activity: Look up a chart of constellations, and check out which ones you can see in the sky on a clear night. (Some sites you might find useful for this activity are The Stars Tonight, Constellations for Kids, and Your Sky.)
Read John 1:18.
Read “God’s Great Love for Us.”
Read “Acting God."
Discuss with the children ways they see God in the characteristics Jesus demonstrated while He was on earth. Talk about how as children they can help others see God through their actions and behavior.
Read “God in Us.”
