The Paperboy

It had been a bitterly cold Christmas Eve. After weeks of frantic shopping, wild advertising, lights, and noise, the city was quiet. The streets were covered with slush from snow melted by hurried last-minute shoppers.

Dawn approached, and no one noticed the homeless youth sleeping on a makeshift bed of rags, newspapers, and old tattered blankets just beneath the overpass near the edge of the city.

The boy’s name was Sean. Sean's only friend in the world was a pigeon that slept in the support structure of the overpass. Several pigeons made their home there and Sean had affectionately named the bird he most liked, Whistler. Sean often shared crumbs from his small portion of food with Whistler and his friends. He appreciated their cooing and company.

An Audio Bible Adventure: Make Me a Cake

A retelling of 1 Kings 17

See “Fire from Heaven” for another story on the prophet Elijah’s life.

This story takes place in Israel, around 850 BC. It was a sad and difficult time for a nation that was suffering under the worst king it had ever had, King Ahab. His wicked wife, Jezebel, greatly influenced King Ahab and he had adopted her religion of Baalism, the worship of the pagan devil-god, Baal. Under King Ahab and Jezebel’s rule, the prophets of the true God were systematically slaughtered and Baalism became the official state religion.

To show His displeasure, God sent His prophet Elijah to King Ahab with an ominous message: “As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there will be neither dew nor rain these years, except at my word.”

An Audio Bible Adventure: There Are Giants in the Land!

A retelling of Numbers chapters 13–14; Deuteronomy 1:19–46; 9:1–3; and Joshua 11:21–23; 14:6–15; 15:13–17.

Many months had passed since the children of Israel had left Egypt and were now camped at Kadesh-Barnea in the desert. Just a few miles to the north lay the hills of the Promised Land. Moses called the people together and said, “We have reached the land which the Lord our God has promised to give us, so go up and take possession of it as the Lord told you. Do not be afraid!”

The elders of Israel were unsure that they could do it and said, “Let us send men to spy out the land first. They can bring back a report about the route we are to take and the towns we will come to.”

Despite the elders’ lack of faith, God agreed to their plan and told Moses, “Choose a leader from each of the twelve tribes and send them to explore the land of Canaan.”
